Square Enix Kicks Off Sale Rumors

Square Enix has denied reports that it is selling itself and has not received any takeover offers, the Japanese publisher revealed today.

This week, Bloomberg Japan, citing "two bankers familiar with the situation," reported that several parties were interested in acquiring the JRPG maker. News of the acquisition was apparently so solid that Square Enix's stock price rose 13.8% on the Tokyo Stock Exchange today.

Hours later, Square quashed the rumor in an official statement. No, the Final Fantasy company is not for sale. [Square Enix said in a statement (via Bloomberg), "We have no intention of selling the company or any part of its business, nor have we received any offer from a third party to acquire the company or any part of its business."

It would be a big shock to Square Enix to be acquired. However, it would not be entirely improbable. After all, Bethesda (a similarly sized RPG giant) was recently acquired by Microsoft for the princely sum of $7.5 billion, and the Xbox company was among the candidates rumored to be considering acquiring Square Enix.
