Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO Cancelled

Remember all that talk about Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO coming in 2022...it's not coming in 2022. It's not coming at all.

Contract developer Athlon Games, a subsidiary of Leyou, which was acquired by Tencent, has detailed how the game will not go forward. It appears that contract negotiations between Amazon and its current owner, Tencent, have broken down and a dispute is brewing.

"We have been unable to secure terms to move forward with this title at this time," an Amazon spokesperson said. They continued, "We love the Lord of the Rings IP and regret that we are unable to bring this game to our customers."

The Amazon team that worked on the game appears to be moving on to other projects. Not too surprising, given the nature of Amazon, which doesn't play particularly well with other giant companies, and Tencent, which likes to stick its fingers in every pie; add this to the troubled nature of Amazon Game Studios, and you get this. [Founded in 2014, Amazon Game Studios has yet to release a game; it has cancelled every high-profile title in development, including Breakaway and Crucible. It seems likely that "New World," which will be released this August, will be the studio's first release.
