Rumor Microsoft planning new Windows Store that is not the worst

According to Windows Central, reliable sources say that Microsoft is working on a new Windows 10 app storefront to replace the hated current Windows Store. The goal is to "introduce a modern, fluid user interface and make changes to the policies that govern the types of apps developers can submit to the store."

One of the main changes is to allow developers to submit their programs as unpackaged Win32 apps rather than converting them to MSIX package format.

With any luck, this will mean that users will be able to more easily access and change the folder where games are installed, making the PC version of Game Pass simpler to manage (currently, you can install games on an SSD or default to the C drive no matter what Putting it back is a crapshoot) and allow mods to be installed more easily (currently this relies on the developer enabling it as an option, and even then certain mods won't work).

Another major change is that developers will be able to host their software on their own content delivery network rather than using Microsoft's in-app commerce platform, according to a source at Windows Central. Microsoft will not take profits from app developers who utilize their own in-app commerce channels. Interestingly, this rumor comes at a time when Apple is about to face the U.S. Senate over antitrust concerns regarding the iOS App Store and is about to go to court with Epic over the issue; Epic is demanding that developers be allowed to handle their own payments, which is a If this is indeed Microsoft's plan, there is even a possibility that Epic will bring this case to court.

The new Windows Store, codenamed "Sun Valley," is expected to debut with the Windows 10 UI refresh scheduled for fall 2021.
