Xbox Series X/S received a treasure chest of graphics effects from AMD.

Good news, AMD PC gamers! AMD's open source FidelityFX effects are coming to the Xbox Series X and Series S! Why should you care about your keyboard and mouse? Because AMD's RDNA 2 architecture is widely shared from PC GPUs to the latest consoles from Sony and Microsoft, and what works for one platform should work for another.

FidelityFX includes Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS), Variable Rate Shading, Single Pass Downsampler, Screen Space Reflection (SSSR), Ray Tracing Shadow Denoiser, and more! It's a collection of graphics effects. It's a pretty fancy toolkit, and the best part is that it is open source and cross-platform.

FidelityFX currently supports 40 games, including "Horizon Zero Dawn," "Resident Evil 2 and 3," "Far Cry 6," "World of Warcraft: Shadowlands," "Cyberpunk 2077 AMD is looking to increase this list exponentially with the potential of Microsoft's console. [However, the use of FidelityFX on the Xbox is not a big surprise. AMD's most notable advantage over Nvidia in desktop graphics is that the two leading consoles share AMD's graphics technology, which is why many developers are creating games with AMD hardware in mind. [However, AMD is trying to stand up to Nvidia's feature stack, and its FidelityFX super resolution (FSR) feature remains hotly anticipated; AMD has said it is not yet ready to announce anything regarding upscaling capabilities, but it is expected that Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) to compete, it needs to come out swinging out of the gate.

FSR still has many hurdles to overcome, but if it can reach its potential here, it will be a powerful feather in AMD's cap for both PCs and consoles.

Nothing has been announced yet about FidelityFX's PlayStation 5 compatibility, but one can imagine that AMD's longstanding and close relationship with Sony means that the two companies are preparing something.
