Modders want to turn Valheim into a 1,000-person MMO

Valheim is a great game solo, but it is even better with other players. Exactly how many other players could make a big difference in the future if a pair of modders could make their vision a reality.

VaLNGOS, short for Valheim Large Network Game Object Server Suite, is a project that aims to turn a 10-player cooperative survival game into an MMO that can house over 1,000 players on the same server. Sounds ambitious, but the project's team is already hosting a custom server called "Comfy Valheim," which can apparently support 64 players at a time. I recently checked out Bannerlord Online, a mod that turns "Mount & Blade 2" into an amazingly functional 1,000-player MMO.

"By moving all server processing from the player's computer to the server and using a special programming language designed to write the operating system, the team is confident it can manage even thousands of players," a PC Gamer reads an email from the modding team.

VaLNGOS will include mod support, which sounds like a great idea; Comfy Valheim is a mod-free vanilla server, but with a thousand players, one would think they would want to enhance the game with MMO-like mods. Maybe Epic Loot, or Valheim Legends which adds 6 character classes with special abilities to a Viking survival game. [I can imagine players building entire towns on multiple continents, player hubs, and trading posts around the world. It would also breathe life into PvP, which is often an afterthought in Valheim. Competing Viking clans could sail the seas in large fleets and raid each other's settlements.

It is still unclear when this server will go live, but we will definitely be keeping an eye on it; the VaLNGOS website has a link to the project's Discord and more information.
