The Oculus Quest 2 will not be replaced by an upgraded VR headset anytime soon.

The Oculus Quest 2 is the best VR headset for most people considering its relatively low price (starting at $299) and robust features, but is it about to be replaced by a newer model?

For the long answer, Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs, offered a clear view in a recent Twitter Q&A.

"People are also asking about Quest 3, which doesn't exist yet, and any reporter listening to us will tell you there is no Quest 3, only Quest 2," Bosworth said.

It's easy to stick with the key word "yet" because it suggests that Quest 3 is on Facebook's roadmap. However, Bosworth is not cautious about the situation; Quest 3 may eventually happen, but Quest Pro will come first. To be more specific, "it won't happen this year."

"For the curious, Quest 2 will be on the market for a while longer.

Put another way, if you just bought Quest 2, you can rest assured that it will not be replaced by something newer and shinier in the near future. Even if Quest Pro comes out on January 1, 2022 at the earliest, without making Bosworth's statement untrue, it will still be more than seven months from now.

Aside from the cost of entry, the Quest 2's other big draw is that it is a stand-alone headset with inside-out tracking. It is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 processor and 6GB of RAM built into the headset, with 64GB ($299) and 256GB ($399) storage options available.

Improvements have been made over time. Software updates have raised the initial refresh rate from 72Hz to 90Hz, with plans to allow 120Hz. Additionally, since launch, the Oculus team has added the ability to play PC VR games on the Quest 2 through Air Link, which allows streaming via Wi-Fi, either through a USB cable or through yet another software update.

The one drawback to Quest 2 (and it is a major drawback for some) is the need to link it with a Facebook account. But if you can get past that, the Quest 2 is a great VR headset and gets better with each update. It's also very comfortable (the Elite strap is a game changer). And it won't be replaced by new hardware anytime soon.
