Respawn Becomes First Oscar-Winning Game Developer

Respawn Entertainment may be the first and only studio to call itself an "Oscar-winning studio" after a World War II short film it helped produce won the Oscar for best documentary (short) at this weekend's Academy Awards.

Colette, a documentary co-produced by Respawn and Oculus and distributed for free by The Guardian, follows one of the last survivors of the French resistance as he returns to Germany after 74 years and visits the concentration camp where his brother was killed.

The documentary was produced as part of several live-action historical shorts produced for the studio's VR shooter Medal Of Honor: Above And Beyond, Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn, was named co-producer. Naturally, the studio is very pleased to be the first video game studio to win an Academy Award.

We didn't have much to say about "Medal Of Honor: Above And Beyond" itself, with reviewer Tyler Wilde calling it an "inconsistent and sometimes boring World War II virtual reality adventure." Since Respawn has proven that it can make an Oscar-winning documentary, one can only hope that it will show its chops and produce a heartfelt film about wall-running soldiers and their giant robot boyfriends.
