General
The WD Black 5TB P10 is an excellent external HDD.

Backing up your data is never a thrilling experience, but if something should ever happen to your files or primary storage device, you'll be glad you did. That's where WD's Black P10 Game Drive can help. The highest capacity model (5TB) is just $99.99 right now at Newegg.

With a sale price of $129.99 (down from $149.99), Newegg takes an additional $30 off the price when you apply coupon code BACKUP737 at checkout, bringing this drive down to its lowest price ever (we have ).

This unit has a 5TB hard drive built in instead of a solid state drive (we wish Benjamin had 5TB of SSD storage, but that won't happen anytime soon). What we like about this drive is that it is from a reputable manufacturer, it is relatively stylish (for portable storage), and it offers a lot of storage for backing up files.

The P10 has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface. When we tested this drive, the highest synthetic benchmark speeds were 130 MB/sec read and 125 MB/sec write.

Real-world performance is a more relevant metric, as one would not purchase an external HDD to run benchmarks; it took 57 seconds to copy 3.4 GB of Hearthstone, and a total of 73.8 GB of mixed large and small files, World of Warcraft, with a total of 73.8 GB of mixed large and small files, took 16 minutes and 35 seconds to copy. These speeds averaged 61 MB/sec and 75 MB/sec, respectively.

Overall, these are decent speeds; SSDs are obviously faster, but they require less storage capacity. For example, Samsung's T5 SSD is one of the best external drives, at $129.99 for 1TB. In the end, it comes down to a question of which is more important: capacity or speed. If the former, this P10 is worth considering.
