Notorious "Rainbow Six Siege" cheater, suspect in November hostage standoff

In November 2020, police responded to a report of a "hostage situation" at Ubisoft Montreal. Although it eventually turned out to be a hoax and no actual threat was found, numerous employees were trapped on the roof for several hours while police cleared the building, causing significant disruption and expense. Fortunately, no one was physically injured.

The perpetrator of this hoax is currently unknown, but La Presse reports that a Frenchman named Yanni Ouahioune is suspected, a Rainbow Six Siege player who goes by the handle Y4nn0XX and has been banned multiple times (Y4nn0XX), who has been banned several times. (80 times, according to a report supposedly based on Y4nn0XX's claims).

He certainly seems to have a beef with Ubisoft: videos on Y4nn0xxX's YouTube channel include messages warning of "punishing Rainbow Six Siege with cheats from hell" and a recent "Yannoxware Fuck Ubisoft Rap" a musical number called "Yannoxware Fuck Ubisoft Rap. Last year, an account by the same name offered "private cheats" and "rage cheats" for Rainbow Six Siege on at least one cheater forum.

According to the newspaper, Ouahioune admitted attempting to steal Siege players' passwords and his involvement in a 2017 swatting incident. However, he denied involvement in the November 2020 hoax, telling the site, "I did nothing. I just cheated on their video games. The only reason I called Ubisoft was to insult them for banning me."

"Normally, I would say that I was the one who sent the police to Ubisoft just for the buzz, but hey, now there is zero buzz. If my name came up, it's because I'm known at Ubisoft."

Court documents obtained by La Presse reveal that, following the November hoax, there were two false threats against Ubisoft Montreal, one on December 18, a phone call claiming a bomb was planted near the building's daycare center, and another on January 6, 2021, and was a 911 call that a group of hostage takers had kidnapped and executed a company executive. These incidents did not attract public attention because the police took a "more cautious" approach to their investigation before dispatching a large force.

A third call, believed to have been made on November 7 by the same person, more clearly indicated that the perpetrator was someone specifically trying to grief "Rainbow Six Siege." After being intercepted by Ubisoft's internal security, the caller threatened to "keep threatening [Ubisoft] to death" and demanded Rainbow Six keys and the ability to impose bans on players Ouahioune denied being involved in these calls as well.

They also demanded that pro player Spoit, a member of Godsent, be permanently banned, which appears to form at least part of the basis for the Ouahioune connection. Ubisoft's investigation has found a connection between the perpetrators of the Montreal hoax and the hacking of Spoit's account, which Ouahioune had previously bragged about. However, he told La Presse that he was just bluffing to impress people. This is consistent with his statement that he usually made bomb threats "to create a buzz," and that his efforts went down the drain "when everyone found out that I had not hacked the account."

Ubisoft declined to comment on the matter to protect the integrity of its investigation. A representative said in an email, "Our first priority remains to protect the progress of the investigation, which we hope will lead to the identification and conviction of those responsible for the events of last fall." 'In agreement with the SPVM investigators, we will refrain from further comment.'

Y4nn0XX may be a group, not an individual: Y4nn0XX may be a group, not an individual. The forum where the cheat is being sold states that it is being developed by four people, and the unexpectedly competent Ubisoft Rap consistently refers to Y4nn0XX as "we." "However, even if Ouahioune were determined to be involved in this hoax, either as an individual or as a member of an organization, it is unlikely that he would face any punishment because France does not extradite its own citizens for prosecution in other jurisdictions.
