Fortnite Earns $9.1 Billion in Two Years

Amid a flurry of formerly confidential court documents from Epic's ongoing legal battle with Apple, it has been revealed that Fortnite generated a staggering $9.1 billion in revenue between 2018 and 2019.

In a financial presentation dated January 2020 (via The Verge), Epic reported that Battle Royale raked in $5.8 billion in 2018 and $3.7 billion in 2019. This far outpaces other games owned by Epic (including Rocket League and Battlebreakers), which accounted for $108 million in the last two years. The Unreal Engine achieved a more impressive figure of $220 million, more than twice as much as any non-Fortnite game, but still far less than Fortnite itself.

Epic's overall profit for the past two years was $5.5 billion. This includes all aspects of the business, including the Epic Games Store, which, as we found out this year, is losing money to establish itself as a competitor to Steam. What is surprising is the degree to which Fortnite dominates Epic's revenue stream.

A presentation in late 2020 (via Eurogamer) further breaks down Fortnite's success: Marvel has been overwhelmingly successful in collaborating with brands, and Epic has described Fortnite as " open-world simulation sandbox" and plans to take battle royale even further forward; Epic also plans to take a stab at Fortnite's revenue by partnering with Apple on mobile optimization, party royale promotion, and a major Marvel push. The plan was to throw a wrench in the works.

So far, there are no plans to do so.

The three-week trial between Epic and Apple began in earnest today, and already secrets have leaked out about Sony's cross-platform charges and the amount Epic pays for these store-exclusive titles. That is, if the trial hasn't been interrupted by a pay phone with hundreds of kids yelling "Free Fortnite."
