Epic Games spent at least $1 billion on exclusive content

As of September 2019, Epic Games had 105 exclusive content contracts for the Epic Games store, totaling just over $1 billion spent to secure them. This is according to documents released as part of the ongoing Epic v. Apple trial, which has unearthed some truly interesting business deals.

The October 2019 "Review of Performance and Strategy" document (hosted here as a .pdf) reiterates that Epic spent $444 million on an exclusive launch in 2019 . However, it also confirms that $542 million was spent on exclusive launches in 2019 and that as of September 2019, Epic had already spent $52 million to secure four exclusive launches in 2021. Naturally, this number would have increased since then.

While it is hardly breaking news that Epic Games is spending huge amounts of money on the PC storefront, $1 billion for exclusive launches (most of which are timed, as they usually appear on Steam 12 months later) is an astonishing figure: from December 2018 to 2019 It is a far more astonishing figure than the $11 million spent on free game offerings between September of 2018, which seems pretty minuscule when one considers the number of new accounts signed up.

Exclusives will probably continue, too: according to Epic's "Aggressive Pursuit Model" (i.e., the model it follows when it works), 52 exclusive titles in 2021, 36 in 2022, 34 in 2023, 34 in 2024 The company is aiming for Given that Epic talked about doubling their exclusive launches earlier this year, they seem to be following that model.
