Blizzard is losing millions of players in every game

Activision Blizzard's latest financial results reveal that Blizzard has lost an additional 2 million players across its games in just three months.

As MassivelyOP discovered, Blizzard's monthly active users fell from 29 million in February (Q4 2020) to 27 million in this quarter's financial results. The outlet notes that this is part of a steady trend for Blizzard, which has lost 11 million players over the past three years, a 29% player decline across all titles.

However, Blizzard is not in dire straits. The company's revenue was up 7% year over year, driven largely by the release of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Hearthstone's latest expansion, Forged in the Barrens, also performed well, and Blizzard believes it is on track to surpass the previous expansion for the second consecutive year. Overwatch gained 10 million new players without releasing any new heroes or modes.

Blizzard's fans seem to be solidifying around the studio's biggest releases. However, Eurogamer notes that it has been some time since the studio last released a major new title. Sure, the studio has dabbled (with varying degrees of success) in remasters and nostalgic fare like "WoW Classic" and has released a slew of MMO expansions, but it's been a while since new and exciting releases like "Overwatch," "Diablo 3," "Starcraft 2," and "Heroes of the Storm," Blizzard's other games have been largely neglected.

Hopefully Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 will help fill the gap, and more remakes like Diablo 2: Resurrected and WoW Classic: even in the near future. Classic: The Burning Crusade will also appear.

During the investor conference call, no mention was made of the departure of Jeff Kaplan, director of "Overwatch" and Blizzard vice president, or of Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's significant pay cut.
