Improved Mako handling in "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" can be disabled if you "like pain

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is primarily a remaster, but also a gameplay overhaul, especially for the first game in the series, and as BioWare detailed earlier this year, the controversial Mako is one of the changes. The notoriously bouncy vehicle will have more weighty physical properties, be less prone to slipping, have faster boost and shield recharge, and will no longer cause an immediate game over when touching lava. There is also no longer an XP penalty for kills when riding mako.

But as BioWare knows, not everyone hated Mako. Project director Mac Walters and environment director Kevin Meek told PC Gamer earlier today that there is an option to return to a floating version of the Big Trak-inspired track." For those who like pain, we are leaving the option to revert it back to something more like the original controls, if you want," Meek said.

"Some people like it, some people don't. It's a lighter touch than some people think, as we often emphasize in our marketing. It's also drop-back friendly, with options to choose how you want to operate it."

The new Mako will also have improved camera controls for more accurate aiming at low angles, which Walters was happy to finally fix. Close-up aiming is a big problem," he said. I actually forgot to mention that. It was almost impossible to track and hit anything within perhaps 20 meters. Also, distant objects at different altitudes from me were like, "I'm aiming there, but I'm shooting here." Fixing that, too, made it a little more fun."

"Playing Mako now versus playing Mako when it was original, especially on the PC, it's like night and day. Every time I run into a Thresher Maw or try to climb a mountain, I don't want to tap my keyboard or mouse."

To get over that mountain, the Legendary Edition Mako will be equipped with a boost button, separate from the jump jet that activates the lowrider bounce." Meek says, "Whether you liked Mako's moves or not, I don't think anyone liked the idea of almost going over that hill, hitting the jump jet button, falling on your back, and not being able to get back up.

You can read the full interview with Walters and Meek next week; Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be available May 14.
