Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford hints at new "Borderlands" game?

There is no doubt that one day there will be a new "Borderlands" game. The video game industry is built on the wings of sequels, and "Borderlands 3" was a huge success. However, it is beginning to look like it will happen sooner than expected.

The gears are starting to turn at Gamereactor, where the site recently stated that a new Borderlands game is "a lot closer than you think." Interestingly, the site stated that the game will not be a numbered sequel, but a spin-off of sorts. No evidence was provided to support this claim, but a comment by VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb gave it a bit more credibility.

"I think Gearbox will be putting out the rumored 'Borderlands' spinoff. They may not necessarily be developing it, but I think they're always involved in that game." They own part of the IP with Take-Two, so that makes sense to me. I haven't confirmed that game for sure, but I did see the Gamereactor article and heard somewhat about it. [because, in response to Grubb's statement, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford tweeted something somewhere between a denial and a tease.

"I've heard rumors that Gearbox is 'backing' or 'co-developing' another 'Borderlands' game (or a new spin-off). These rumors are not accurate; Gearbox is leading the development of the upcoming 'Borderlands' franchise (or a 'Borderlands' adjacent game) and is not co-developing."

"More: we are definitely working on something great that will surprise and delight you all, and if any of you have Skills-To-Pay-Bills and want to get in on the Borderlands action, we're working on a big one! (We are working on a big one.)

This is just idle chit-chat, but Pitchford has never been shy about teasing new releases on Twitter. The timing is also interesting: Borderlands 3 will be two years old this fall, the same age Borderlands 2 was when it was released: the same age Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was when it was released!

This is the same age as when Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was released.

This is also the time of year when teases of new games begin to appear: we are just over a month away from E3 2021, where this kind of thing is customarily shown to the public.
