Microsoft Removes Dangerous AMD Driver That Bricked Some Windows 10 PCs

Dear AMD user, If your Windows 10 PC recently failed to boot with an error message indicating a problem with the boot drive, a buggy driver distributed through Windows Update may be the cause. Microsoft has removed this driver after receiving numerous reports of boot problems.

The buggy driver is labeled "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. - SCSIAdapter - 9.3.0.221" and as discovered by Windows Latest, "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" Numerous reports of PCs crashing with a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error code.

Members of the Windows Insider program actually brought this issue to Microsoft's attention several weeks ago when it became apparent in a test build. At the time, Microsoft said it was looking into the issue, but the driver still graduated the Windows Insider program, causing problems on a number of production PCs running AMD hardware.

A Reddit thread lists a growing number of complaints.

"I've been getting this update pushed to me even though I'm not in the Preview/Insider build, Ryzen 5900X, X570 motherboard. Same problem as those above...after rebooting for the second or third time, Windows started up with auto-repair and a message that the update had been removed...I don't know what MS was thinking when they put out this update." one user wrote, "I'm not sure if I've ever seen this update before...

Some users found that after Windows 10 failed to start several times, activating the built-in automatic startup repair function would repair Windows 10 itself. Some users did not.

More frustratingly, the problem sometimes persisted even after reinstalling Windows because Windows Update would reintroduce buggy drivers. However, according to Microsoft software engineers, the driver has since been taken offline.

So why did this happen? According to the software engineers, the driver was gradually distributed to compatible PCs, and at that stage no problems were noted. But then, because of the way the driver was written, it began to be installed on incompatible machines.

"Because the driver is installed with a very generic hardware ID, that driver will be in the wrong place on certain machines," they explained.

AMD and Microsoft share responsibility for this, but as the engineers noted, "Ultimately MS provided and installed this driver.

If you have already received the driver and are stuck in a boot loop, there is a solution described in the Reddit thread: get a USB flash drive of 8GB or larger and use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool to install Windows 10 to put Windows 10 on it. Then boot from the USB flash drive, select "Repair Computer" > "Troubleshooting" > "Repair Startup" and let it run.
