Filmmaker Claims Capcom Used His Creature Designs in "Resident Evil 7: Resident Evil"

A filmmaker claims that Capcom used his creature designs for the monsters in "Resident Evil: The Village." [Richard Rafhorst, director of the 2013 found footage horror film "Frankenstein's Army," has published an image on his LinkedIn page comparing the film's monsters to those in "Village." The Big Daddy-like creature with a fan stuck to his desk stands in the same abandoned building in the first image; in the second image, both the movie and game versions of the creature are on fire.

"In 2013, I directed the film Frankenstein's Army," Rahforst wrote in an accompanying post. One of them was used in the latest "Resident Evil" game entirely without permission or credit.

Twitter user CloneKorp also tweeted a thread comparing Frankenstein's Army to the Resident Evil Village monsters with an even stronger resemblance Raaphorst replied to the thread, "I am so proud of the Frankenstein's Army, and I am so proud of the Resident Evil Village monsters. At first I felt anger, then pride, but now seeing this makes me sad."

Raaphorst replied.

Raaphorst told us that he was not sure if Capcom did this intentionally, but wanted to make it clear that "there are too many coincidences in this material." He also said that if Capcom had "let [me] know beforehand, I would have been super happy."

Raaphorst also said that he does not intend to take any legal action against Capcom, saying, "I hope they give me credit."

It is not uncommon for horror media to draw inspiration from other sources within the genre, but the similarities with Propellerhead in particular are rather striking. Whether it is an uncredited inspiration or a remarkable coincidence remains to be seen. If there is one thing we do know, it is that horror games and movies love to stick inanimate objects on top of human bodies.

We have also asked Capcom for comment on this claim and will update if we hear back.
