Destiny 2: Season of the Splicer" live streaming begins, including transmog, new rewards, and more.

Destiny 2's "Splicer Season" is upon us, bringing new 6-player competitive activities, rewards, and the long-awaited (and incredibly confusing) transmog system. As always, a full rundown of everything you can expect can be found in the bungie.net patch notes.

Transmog, which allows players to dress as they please without sacrificing status, is a big part of many MMOs, and players, including our own Tim Clark, were very excited about it. Unfortunately, the system Bungie revealed a few weeks ago seemed unnecessarily complex and laborious, and the initial response from the player base was not positive. It will be very interesting to see how that changes as players dive into the new content.

Other highlights of the patch notes include quite a few changes to the weapon and ability sandboxes, as well as fixes to the core playlist and Deep Stone Crypt, Garden of Salvation, and The Last Wish raids. Shaders are now unlockable, are no longer consumed when used, and are placed in the collection rather than in inventory. However, applying a shader requires 500 glimmer and unlocking a new shader costs more Bright Dust.

Overall the new shader system is a positive change, but players quickly noticed one major drawback: there is no way to organize shaders or mark favorites. That is, there is no way to organize shaders or mark favorites. Whenever I want a new look, I have to root around in a big dumpster of color swatches. (Hopefully Bungie will implement some sorting system in the near future.

Naturally, there is also a new season pass:

One change that I found oddly enjoyable was that the "Sparrow," the magical space bike that the Guardian calls up from the air and rides around on, no longer times out and disappears after jumping off, but now stays "semi-permanently" in the game world That's what it's all about now. Remember where you parked it! (Yes, it would be fun to ride around yelling at strangers, "Hey, have you seen my bike? (Yes, it will be fun to ride around shouting "Hey, have you seen my bike? You enjoy the game your way, I'll enjoy it mine.)
