Remedy Teases "New and Exciting Early-Stage Projects" in Latest Business Update

Control studio Remedy Entertainment previously announced that it is partnering with Epic Games on two new projects, a "AAA multiplatform game" and a smaller-scale effort, as well as a live-service game codenamed "Vanguard." The company revealed that it is working on the project. In a quarterly business review released today, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said that in addition to these three projects, work on the studio's single-player campaigns for "CrossfireX" and "Crossfire HD" is progressing well. Remedy's EAF is also making good progress on the single player campaign for CrossfireX and Crossfire HD, he said. [Remedy's AAA game project with Epic Games will soon move into full production, while a second, smaller game continues in full production. Vanguard, a free-to-play co-op game project, has allowed us to define many of the core elements of the game. Development is progressing at a steady pace, internal playtesting is ongoing, and the next phase of closed external gameplay testing has begun."

Remedy used to be a studio that developed one game at a time, but in recent years (especially with the control and successful funding from Epic) it has expanded its staff to be able to develop multiple projects simultaneously. according to Virtala, Remedy's headcount has grown to 281 employees as of the end of March 2021, and it is "piloting and evaluating new ways to attract and hire talent."

Unfortunately, there is no new information in the report about what these new games actually are. Crossfire is a popular online FPS in Asia, but a PC version of Crossfire X has yet to be announced (it is currently said to be for Xbox One and Xbox Series X), and Crossfire HD will only be available in China.Remedy's Creative Director Sam Lake said last year that the studio is currently working on a new "Remedy Connected Universe" game, which is widely expected to be "Alan Wake 2".

(I remain hopeful for a new Remedy-developed "Max Payne" - Epic can afford to buy it back from Rockstar, after all).

What can be said with certainty is that, at least for now, work on "Control" is finished, but even that is questionable: according to Virtala, almost all Control developers within Remedy are working on "new and exciting early-stage projects including "including some that are moving on to other things. Given that all of Remedy's development that we know of is in or near full production, this seems likely; we have contacted Remedy and will update if we hear back.
