EA Follows Valve's Example and Crowdfunds Prize Pool for Apex Legends Championship

Electronic Arts has announced plans to raise as much as $3 million in crowdfunding for this year's Apex Legends Global Series Championship.

Four different bundles of Mechameleon, Bored to Death, Wild Speed, and Silverback will be available for 2500 Apex coins, each with one Legendary Legend skin, Epic Banner Frame, and Epic Gun Charm. For collectors who want it all, the Animal Kingdom Bundle is available for 9,000 Apex coins.

Boared to Death Bundle:

Wild Speed Bundle:

Silverback Bundle:

Bundles are not cheap: 3,000, the closest to the 2,500 available on Origin. Apex Coins is $30, and the 10,000-card bundle is $100. (The 9,000 coins are available for $90, but at that price you might as well add $10 to get the bonus.) EA will add $5 per bundle and $20 per Animal Kingdom collection to the prize pool for the ALGS Championship.

If this sounds strangely familiar, you may recall The International, an annual Dota 2 championship tournament that crowdfunds its prize pool through the sale of International Battle Passes; The International far surpasses that of the ALGS, with a 2019 prize pool exceeding $34 million and the upcoming International 10 topping $40 million, but this is also the first time EA has attempted such an endeavor with Apex Legends. The first crowdfunded "International" in 2013 had a very similar prize pool of $2.9 million, which ballooned to nearly $11 million the following year, and EA is hoping to do the same with its own big esports event. They must be hoping to see it take off.

The ALGS Championship bundle is on sale now and will be available until June 1. The tournament kicks off on May 22 and runs through June 13.
