PvP in Overwatch 2 will be 5vs5, with only one tank per team.

Blizzard revealed in today's livestream that PvP will be changed to 5vs5 in the new "Overwatch 2". The reduction from the current 6v6 PvP in "Overwatch" will also bring changes to team composition, which will be limited to one tank, two DPS, and two supports.

"We feel this is the next step in the way "Overwatch" should be played," said game director Aaron Keller. 'If you think about it, there's a lot happening on the Overwatch map. It's incredibly fast-paced. We've always tried to make sure that the combat is easy to see and very straightforward, but even with all that effort, sometimes it's hard to keep track of what the other 11 players are doing on the battlefield. Removing two of them will simplify everything and allow players to understand everything that is happening around them and make better choices."

As expected, the reduction in team size has affected Blizzard's approach to the new map design, but it has an even greater impact on the role of tanks, which will be fixed at one per team.

"Tanks can be a problem," says Keller. 'DPS heroes are simple. But tanks have the ability to become noise or stack with other tanks, which can cause problems when other teams try to overcome or counter them.

Limiting the number of players on the team to five and the tank to one will increase the likelihood that an individual player can carry the team.

Tanks will also undergo some changes in "Overwatch 2" aimed at "being more aggressive," said lead hero designer Geoff Goodman." In terms of gameplay, it will be a bit more hybrid and not just about defending the walls." We saw some examples of this in the gameplay delivered; Zarya has two bubble charges that she can use at will on herself and her teammates (for example, she can double bubble herself).

At the moment, reactions to the change are clearly divided: some players are eager to make PvP in Overwatch more structured, while others foresee the end of the tank's raison d'etre: as redditor kooog As they say, "OWL tanks have taken the Thanos snap." More on these reactions and our own thoughts on the future of the "Overwatch" meta in the coming days.
