Respawn Explains Apex Legends Cosmetic Pricing: 'Math is Harder Than People Think'

In an AMA on the Apex Legends subreddit, a "director-level monetizer" at Respawn agreed to answer questions about battle royale cosmetics. Since a typical Apex Legends skin costs close to $20, the limits of the term "microtransaction" are tested. Therefore, x5hadau asked, "There must be a way to ensure that players do not feel cheated when they buy something."

The response from Respawn began by explaining that "Respawn is gameplay first" and that avoiding making people feel as if Apex Legends is pay-to-play was behind some decisions: "That's why Legends is grindable and, Legend Tokens to unlock Legends are generally easier to obtain (yes, we know that has created other challenges that we had to fix: ...... (Math is harder than people think, and when assumptions are wrong, it is harder to adjust them).

Respawn is also smaller than the teams behind many other battle royale games ("As much as people think we can easily provide cosmetics because our competitors are outputting content at a faster rate, our team is much smaller and spend a lot of time on our skins"), and explained that creating cosmetics is more difficult than players expect. Because it "doesn't take into account all the back and forth between concept, QA, ideation, production, etc.

The submission said, "We certainly want to serve as many players as possible, so we are going to try different things to learn what works."

When asked why it has been almost a year since the last new Likorall was released, they replied, "They certainly don't take much time to make, but the problem with that is that developing more Likoralls directly takes resources away from developing brand new skins They replied, "It means that it takes away from the development of new skins. At a high level, you have to make a trade-off between making 10 recolors or one new regency skin.

The current prize pool for the Apex Legends Championship is augmented by crowdfunding through in-game bundle sales.
