Torchlight 3" Spring Update Will Be Current Developer's Last Work

Echtra will end development on Torchlight 3 with the last update as the studio moves on to new things under new owner Zynga.

In a "bittersweet" blog post this week, the Torchlight developer wrote that the game's spring update (which adds a cannon-bearing Cursed Captain class to the game) will be the studio's last in the game Echtra was acquired by Zynga in March and as part of the deal, the publisher is eager to move developers to other projects.

"This is also a sad message that marks the end of Echtra Games' production of Torchlight III. As you may have heard in the news, we were acquired by Zynga on March 2. As a result of this transition, we are moving on to new (and exciting) things and passing the baton to our partners at Perfect World.

This is sad news for the studio that was founded to make Torchlight games; Torchlight 3 was to be a live service game under the name Torchlight Frontiers, but after some early playtesting, it was reworked into a more traditional action Zynga stated after the acquisition that it wanted the team to offer an "iconic license" for the PC.

Whether this will be the last update for Torchlight 3 remains to be seen, but after the game's launch was met with an underwhelming shrug, it would not be shocking if Perfect World's updates are limited to the most basic maintenance. The spring update will be packed with balance tweaks, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements that will hopefully make the game even better. You can read the full note here.
