Apex Legends Tones Down New Hero, Valkyrie Jet Pack

If mobility is important in Apex Legends, having a bloody jetpack would give you a tremendous advantage. But with new hero Valkyrie flying freely over the competition, Respawn has decided to scale back her rocketed backpack.

Live Balance designer John Larson broke the news earlier today on Twitter. The Vulc jetpack has two modes. One mode is direct flight and the other is "hover," which consumes fuel at a rate of 10%. This allows the aircraft to stay in the air longer, although it sacrifices maneuverability. In fact, many Valk players felt right at home above the clouds.

Larson clearly states that Respawn thought this was fine at launch and responded to one comment by saying, "We thought about it, but we didn't know for sure if it would show up as a problem." The change comes as Apex's esports league, the Global Series, is in full swing, and with a $1 million prize pool at stake, the developer clearly does not want teams hovering out of range and cheaping out on the road to victory.

Respawn has been quite precise in tuning the new elements of this season. Legacy's new Bocek compound bow was nerfed after dominating the first week, and this week Apex finally punished those who quit the arena mid-game.

Frankly, I'm a little sad to hear that Respawn is cooling its Valk jet jets for competitive play. But as Emma found out too late, Titanfall 2 is right around the corner if you want to do an Apex shootout at 100 miles per hour.
