Scavengers to hold 5,000-person public event this weekend

Scavengers is a battle royale of sorts, but James described it in the April preview as a more accessible version of "Escape from Tarkov" or "Hunt: Showdown. Players team up in teams of three and fight for survival in a PvE sandbox/PvP arena hybrid: You may want to kill everything that moves, or you may want to stuff your pockets and kick some ass. Either way, a win is a win.

What's even cooler about Scavengers is that it can be played on a massive scale using an experimental sandbox called ScavLab. Developer Midwinter Entertainment increased the number of players to about 9,600 by the end of the session. Things were remarkably stable, even during the 15th wave of the monster rain, when "thousands of virtual players were executing prerecorded routes and actions.

The first ScavLab public event will be held this weekend. The studio hopes to have up to 5,000 players in a shared environment at the same time, with sessions featuring "competitive sports mini-games (and large-scale combat)" and an online AMA with Midwinter co-founder and CEO Josh Holmes.

"We will test features and gameplay ideas with up to 5,000 players in a shared environment. Our main goal is to create an experience that people will want to participate in for the fun of it, and we'll be testing a lot of things at each ScavLab event with the goal of achieving that."

The first ScavLab public event is scheduled to begin on May 29 at 11 a.m. PT/7 p.m. BST and is open to all Scavengers players, but may not be open to all depending on the number of people who wish to attend. The event will also be streamed live on Twitch; Scavengers itself is free to play on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
