Elite Dangerous Odyssey Releases Strong Patch After Disastrous Launch

A very large patch was applied to Elite Dangerous today: A very large patch was applied to Elite Dangerous: Odyssey today. Audio and visual bugs have been fixed, and UI redesigns have been fixed.

The approximately 5.2 GB patch seems to boast a rather long list of fixes and tweaks. There are just under 30 fixes for audio alone, mainly sound mixing fixes, adding missing dialogs, switching between legal/illegal modes for tools, and other audio cues.

Surprisingly, there are only three fixes for crashes and stability issues. A fix for a soft lock that occurs when the viewpoint switches rapidly during reloading, melee, and grenade throwing, and a fix for a crash that was occurring when the Weapon Handling mod was applied.

Other bugs squashed include loot not spawning in habitat building lockers, health rapidly deteriorating when logging back in social space, lighting and VFX effects adjusted, and numerous fixes to missions not completing or launching properly .

By far the most common fix in the patch is the UI, which has taken the brunt of negative reviews on Steam. While the core of many people's complaints (mainly that it now requires more clicks to get everything done) does not seem to have been fixed, unclear or broken UI issues and HUD issues have been addressed. The HUD now renders properly in screen ratios other than 16:9, and the HUD is now able to render properly in other screen ratios, data should display properly in the cockpit, the pesky "ghost" missions should disappear, the "orbit reset" loop when returning from Odyssey to Horizons has been addressed, and some (but not all) of the transaction server errors have been resolved.

There are a mountain of other patch notes on the official Elite Dangerous forums, and Frontier has stated that they are aware that the patch does not address many of the main concerns that caused the game to receive a mediocre 31% positive rating on Steam." We would like to reiterate that we are aware of other concerns raised by the community that have not been addressed in today's update." We are continuing to investigate your concerns regarding performance, UI, and Odyssey's planetary technology and will keep you informed as information becomes available."

The backlash against the launch of Odyssey is painfully obvious. David Braben, CEO of Frontier, publicly apologized, telling players, "We take these issues very seriously and they are our top priority and focus."
