Acer Keeps the Nintendo 3DS Dream Alive with Glasses-Free 3D Notebook PC

Have you ever felt the need to work on a 3D model or watch a movie in 3D stereoscopic view in the space between you and your laptop screen?

Well, if you answered "yes" to the above, you will be excited to hear that 3D panel technology is finally coming to laptop screens. The newly announced SpatialLabs software (via Trusted Reviews) aims to give developers and 3D artists a new angle to work on their projects without the need for 3D glasses.

3D display technology has been around for some time. We saw it in 2011 with the 3DS, and while it was rough around the edges, it gave many people headaches. Last year we saw Sony's 4K holographic "spatial reality" 3D panel technology make an appearance on the ELFSR1.

However, SpatialLabs' technology is integrated into Acer's mobile workstations and can convert side-by-side video into stereoscopic 3D, as well as support programs such as Blender, Autodesk Fusion 360, and Unreal Engine.

To support SpatialLabs, a stereoscopic screen and eye tracking camera are required.

Sony's ELFSR1 is only a screen and still sells for $5,000. Thus, one can only imagine how expensive a laptop with both the ability to run intensive 3D modeling software and a fancy 3D screen would be. Still, it will likely be some time before SpatialLabs' technology hits the consumer market.
