Humble Heels Donates Over $1 Million to Covid 19 Charities

Humble Bundle's recently announced "Humble Heal: COVID-19 Bundle" collected $1,170,824 (£825,000), the company announced in a recent blog post, including indie hits like Superhot and Undertale games were bundled, while books and other software were also bundled.

The Humble Heal bundle in early May was unique in that it offered a fixed 100% donation to a charity nominated by Humble. In the traditional Humble model, the proceeds are split between the nominated charity, the publisher, and Humble, and the purchaser can choose how the proceeds are distributed. In this bundle, however, all proceeds are split equally among Direct Relief, Doctors Without Borders, International Medical Corps, and GiveIndia.

"At a time when the nation's health care system collapsed in the second wave of the pandemic and Indians are facing so much devastation, you have come forward to join hands with us to provide life-saving assistance, food for hungry families, and cash relief to critical patients in low-income families who lost earners in COVID-19. They have stepped up," said Priyana Prakash, director of partnerships at GiveIndia, in a statement to the Humble community.

The Humble Bundle recently faced a backlash from users when it discreetly removed a slider that allowed users to adjust what percentage of their donations would go to charities, publishers, and Humble itself. Instead, it offered two preset options, both of which minimized charitable donations, which drew much criticism.

In response, they withdrew this change and apologized in a statement suggesting that they would be more transparent and attempt similar changes in the future. For now, these sliders are hidden under a drop-down menu, which is not a good sign.

At the time, critics of the Humble Bundle pointed out that indie storefront itch.io held a substantial charity bundle last year without taking any profits. Last June's Racial Justice and Equality Bundle sold more than 814,000 bundles and raised more than $8.2 million for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Community Bail Fund.

The end result of these bundles is significant support for charities in need of donations and more games for our libraries from developers who have donated. This can only be a good thing.
