Twitch gets a string of DMCA takedowns

Big Music has issued another DMCA against Twitch streamers.

Twitch sent a warning email to creators last week, stating that it had received approximately 1,000 complaints from various music publishers (Thanks, Kotaku.) Twitch further claims that music industry bigwigs are using "copyrighted VOD and clips from creators' They believe they are using "automated tools to scan and identify protected music," and explained that "further notification" could come in the near future.

The advice from the streaming service is the same as in the previous DMCA takedown. "If you know of any unauthorized music or other copyrighted material in past VODs or clips, we strongly recommend that you permanently remove anything containing that material," the email continued. twitch has also introduced a " unpublish all" feature, which also recommends using the "unpublish all" feature.

Twitch also stated that it is "disappointed" in the way the music industry is proceeding with its claims, but that it will "continue to help creators minimize the amount of material that may infringe on the copyrights of others. This includes copyright education and resources, new features on the site to make it easier to manage copyrighted videos, and "working with rights holders on long-term solutions."

Of course, that doesn't help streamers struggling with the latest takedown. Popular Minecraft streamer Sneegsnag was one of those who suffered copyright infringement, saying, "I got a DMCA strike on VOD over Boulevard of Broken Dreams being played in a March 2019 video. If they can go in and watch it, then I should be able to watch it too." The system is terrible; WoW streamer Asmon Gold called the law "ridiculous and outdated," adding, "It's a shame that the Internet is still following a law written in 1998."

Even Twitch is not safe from the rules regarding copyright and DMCA hell. During a BlizzCon stream earlier this year, a Metallica performance was (quite comically) muted on Twitch and replaced with a snazzy honky-tonk song; in October, it was said that the site was looking for some sort of solution to the copyrighted music issue. However, it appears that a solution may still be some time away.
