General
Nvidia DLSS significantly improves the FPS of "Red Dead Redemption 2".

Nvidia and Rockstar Games have good news for owners of GeForce RTX hardware: Red Dead Redemption 2 will support DLSS to improve performance in a future update.

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling and is the second best way to increase a game's frame rate; the first, of course, is to invest in a new graphics card, as it is the only way to improve the game's frame rate. However, in the current climate, purchasing a GPU is not a viable option for many.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is still a popular game on PC, even though it has been out for almost two years (it will be released in November 2019). It is also a relatively demanding game. We've put together a Red Dead Redemption 2 settings guide to help you get the most performance out of the game, but unless you own a high-end GPU, you may be tied to low/minimal image quality settings to achieve a consistent 60 frames per second.

That's where the latest version of DLSS (v2) can help: Nvidia's AI-powered upscaling scheme can dramatically improve the performance of supported games on GeForce RTX hardware, and unlike the initial implementation, generally not blur or degrade images when it is turned on.

Nvidia has not said exactly when R2D2 will support DLSS, only that it is "coming soon." Our guess is that the next GPU driver update will support DLSS, but we will have to wait and see.

Of course, this doesn't mean much to owners of Radeon GPU hardware. However, this will begin to change this June when AMD's open source FidelityFX super-resolution technology comes out; FSR is AMD's answer to DLSS, but the list of supported games is relatively small at first.

In any case, given the GPU shortage, it is nice to see both Nvidia and AMD focusing on upscaling technologies that improve software-side performance at no additional cost to gamers.
