Angry Goats Coming to Minecraft Next Week

The first half of Minecraft's long-pending Caves and Cliffs update, which developer Mojang recently split in two, will hit PCs on June 8 in both Bedrock and Java versions, in what Mojang calls "the most ambitious to date." The second part of the Minecraft expansion is scheduled for the end of 2021.

The update will feature goats. Goats roam the mountains and headbutt unwary players. Also featured are axolotls (cute amphibians found in the water) and the recently released glow squid from Minecraft Earth (still available, but closed to the public on June 30).

Mojang's post announcing the date reads, "From Amethyst to Driplibes to the long-awaited copper block!" included a little detail about the new block types. The hope for copper block is because, unlike other building materials, it ages after placement, apparently "giving buildings a sense of history and a more organic feel." And then comes the spyglass, aka telescope, so you can zoom in and admire the beautiful copper palace.

This short video showcases some of the new features. A particular highlight is using the goat's rushing action to leap into the sky like Superman.

A slightly longer version on the Minecraft YouTube channel adds developer chat and a demo of the goat's bleating sound effects. Caves and Cliffs Part 1 will be released on June 8.
