Minecraft Quietly Removes Reference to 4chan

Mojang Studios removed references to the 10-year-old 4chan from the Java version of Minecraft.

The loading screen splash text "Woo, /v/! This is a reference to the fact that the imageboard site played a major role in the game's initial success; Markus "Notch" Persson promoted the game extensively on 4chan and contributed to Minecraft's popularity by drawing a lot of attention on the video game topic /v/ board (Thanks, Kotaku). This mention never went outside of the Java version of the game.

This text was removed in ver. 1.17, released on May 27. The official patch notes do not mention its removal, but the people at the Minecraft wiki have examined the game's files and documented this change.

Perhaps the deletion is not a huge surprise; 4chan has a solid reputation for being a hive of vitriol, bigotry, and uncommon behavior. It also has some pretty NSFW stuff, and 4chan is pretty low on the list of "sites that should be promoted primarily for games played by young children."

This is not the first time Mojang has removed potentially questionable splash text from the Java version of Minecraft. The studio quietly removed a reference to Notch, the game's creator, several years ago; since the sale of Mojang to Microsoft in 2014, the developer has been widely criticized for several homophobic and sexist remarks on social media.
