Open Source Half-Life: With Alyx's mod, you can join your friends on their VR journey through City 17. But you won't be able to do much more than hang around and watch the fireworks.

As discovered by PCGamesN, alyx-multiplayer is a fairly simple mod that allows you to invite a friend into Half-Life: as a floating faceplate for a combine scanner, drifting and jittering around alyx as a kind of robot buddy.

This mod only tracks the position and rotation of the head, so it can't do much more than float around as a replacement for eyes. Physical interactions and game state are not shared between players. While rudimentary, the modding community is resourceful. After all, efforts to remove VR from dedicated VR titles have already come a long way since the game's release.

Alyx-multiplayer is available for free download from the official site, and for a more ambitious twist on Alyx, Return to Rapture turns the VR version of Half-Life into a shockingly good Bioshock mashup.
