The next "Battlefield" will reportedly be titled "Battlefield 2042.

If the rumors of "Battlefield 2042" are true, the next installment of "Battlefield" will take us far into the future, "21 years from now."

Filling the middle ground between the series debut "1942" and the mech-laden "2142," the next "Battlefield," which will be announced later this week, is said to be set in the near future. This is consistent with what has been leaked time and time again, showing slightly futuristic gunships and battle robots fighting on a tropical beach.

Thanks to a Redditor citing details shared by "[dataminer Tom Henderson] random guy dropped on Discord server," this name came up. According to the leak, 2042 will feature "the largest map in Battlefield history," and will consist of "sectors," each about the same size as a Battlefield 3 map. These sectors will have multiple points of interest and, once secured, cannot be regained.

Teams will be able to take one hero-style "professional" per class, with one or two additional gadgets to enhance their role (the submission suggests a medic with healing darts that can heal from a distance). In addition, a revamped attachment system would provide two slots that could be exchanged on the fly.

The leak also suggests that a beta will be released later this month after a private test session for major content creators and streamers. Of course, we won't have to wait too long to find out if this is true, as EA plans to announce its next "Battlefield" game this Wednesday, June 9.

Personally, I don't think 20 years into the future is far enough away. Dice, please don't hesitate to add another century to this date to produce the successor to "Battlefield 2142" that we deserve.
