Hackers Steal FIFA 21 and Frostbite Source Code from EA

Motherboard reports that Electronic Arts suffered a major data breach, with hackers reportedly taking source code for various games and tools.

According to an underground hacking forum accessed by Motherboard, the hackers claim to have the "full ability to exploit all of EA's services." According to these posts, the group has accessed the complete source code for "FIFA 21" and its matchmaking tools, as well as the source code for the "Frostbite Engine" (EA's most popular in-house game engine, which powers this year's "Battlefield 2042"). They claim to have had access to it.

In total, the hackers claim to have stolen 780 GB worth of data (including proprietary tools and development frameworks) from the publisher and have begun advertising its sale in the hacking community.

In a statement to Motherboard, an EA spokesperson confirmed that the publisher did indeed suffer a data breach and that the files allegedly accessed by the hackers were indeed affected. However, the spokesperson emphasized that no player information was shared.

"We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network in which a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen. No player data has been accessed and we have no reason to believe that there is any risk to player privacy.

"In response to this incident, we have already made security improvements and do not expect any impact on our games or business. We are actively working with law enforcement authorities and other professionals as part of an ongoing criminal investigation."
