Director Hideo Kojima teases next film with "social elements" and no aliens.

At today's Summer Game Fest, Hideo Kojima gave a vague explanation of his next new project, confirming that it will not be a sequel to Death Stranding. In response to a question from moderator Geoff Keighley about the next era of "Hideo Kojima Entertainment," the head of Kojima Productions explained how the current world situation has changed his creative process, and that whatever comes out next will be very different would be very different, he said.

"I can't be specific," he said. 'It's different from the past, and it's not one step at a time.' [The pandemic] is a drastic change, like after 9/11. Entertainment can't afford to lag behind, so we have to adapt and come up with new ways to create.

"We have to think about what will happen in the future. If it was something like aliens in my game, the current state of the world wouldn't matter much. I can create any concept or idea I want."

It's clear that Kojima has a lot on his mind, but it's hard not to think about how blown away "Death Stranding" initially seemed. Long before we knew what the game was about, it was advertised through horror elements and otherworldly enemies. Death Stranding's fantasy elements are arguably the game's weakest elements. Don't.

Kojima continued with a more down-to-earth approach in the interview, mentioning the pandemic and the current state of the world several times.

"But I always want to base my games on social elements.

While still being entertainment, of course. At this rate of change, you really have to think about how you make predictions and how you introduce ideas to players."

Thought-provoking coming from the man who warned of information overload in the Internet age and came up with a game about social disconnection just before a pandemic broke out. Kojima undoubtedly had some luck, but one can hardly blame him for his Nostradamus-esque accuracy.

Kojima also announced Death Stranding: Director's Cut, a new edition of PC Gamer's Choice PC Game of 2020, which is exclusive to Playstation 5, at least initially.
