How the "Dying Light 2" day/night system transformed the city

At the PC Gaming Show, we were able to learn a bit about the world of Dying Light 2, which will be released on December 7. One of the most interesting aspects of the game is that the city changes at night, and we spoke with a developer from Techland. Adrian Ciszewski, [Creative Director], said, "In Dying Light 2, night is everyone's common enemy. During the day, everyone has their own agendas." You might hate one of the factions. But at night, everyone has one enemy." The Infected."

"At night, the world changes. During the day, humans rule the streets, but at night, the streets are filled with the infected. The floor is lava. You should be on the rooftops. Jumping to the ground will hurt you. You will be chased and encounter screamers."

Screamers, if you haven't experienced them yet, are creepy, child-like figures of the infected that have returned from the original game. Their screams confuse you and let other enemies know your location. You can only imagine how terrifying it would be to be spotted by one of these on a night when the infected are swarming and you are at your most vulnerable.

"Night also brings interesting gameplay opportunities," says Siszewski. "If you travel around the world during the day, you will see many infected people sleeping in buildings. They are waiting for night to go hunting. So at night, the buildings are almost empty. And that is your chance to visit these places."

"The subways are full of infected during the day, but at night they are much easier to explore. There may be military containers. The day/night system isn't just a gimmick, it's part of the world. If a quest involves going through underground tunnels, it's much easier if you wait for night."

"Nighttime exploration is further complicated by the presence of biomarkers that measure infection levels. 'Everyone in this world is infected. The longer you spend in the dark, the higher your infection level. So you have to manage not only time, but also infection levels. But we can increase the time with groceries and injections"

.

A gameplay trailer released in May (see above) gives a brief glimpse of how things will unfold at night. The developer playing the demo is creeping through a dark subway tunnel, dodging a handful of zombies still lurking. Here, they need to use stealth to avoid detection. Then they find a crate full of high-quality loot. It looks incredibly nerve-wracking.
