BioWare's New General Manager Promises to Restore Reputation

In December 2020, Casey Hudson announced his departure from BioWare. On the same day, parent company Electronic Arts announced that it will seek a replacement for the general manager Hudson has left. Laura Miele, EA's chief studio officer, said at the time, "We will find the right leader who has a deep love and respect for this studio's heritage, embodies the values of this team, and will help carry on BioWare's incredible legacy."

Today, BioWare announced that it has found the person it has been looking for: Gary McKay, who joined the studio in January 2020 as head of development operations and has served as interim GM since December, has been made permanent in that position.

"I began my career in the industry at EA in 1998, and it was exciting to watch the studio and company grow in those early years," McKay said in a statement. 'I spent the next seven years at EA before moving on. But now, I guess you could say I've come full circle."

"I've been working at EA for a few years now, and I'm very excited to be here.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity. Having spent over 20 years in the industry, there are only a handful of studios that have a bucket list of teams I would love to work with, and BioWare is at the top of that list. This studio is unique in that it has a great history of creating games and universes that are loved by many fans and have been very successful. Success, to me, is about rebuilding that reputation and delivering on the promise of quality."

McKay previously served as director of development for EA's FIFA Soccer series and, according to his Mobygames page, has also worked on Triple Play 2001, Total Club Manager 2004, Def Jam: Also, Tron:. Prior to returning to EA, he was Studio General Manager and Vice President of Product at Vancouver-based studio Navigator Games.

McKay described his role as GM as "setting the vision for the business and making sure the creative developers work best together as a team." However, he did not say what they are currently working on, except to say that development continues on the new "Dragon Age 4" and "Mass Effect" films (which are already known), and that "more will come" from "Star Wars: The Old Republic. He did not say anything about what they are currently working on.
