Razer Officially Announces Sophisticated AMD Blade 14 Gaming Laptop. It's about time, folks.

The new AMD-powered Razer Blade 14 is probably one of the worst kept secrets of the year, and Min Lian-Tan and Frank Azor have been knowingly teasing fans on Twitter ever since we knew it was coming. But it was finally revealed at Razer's E3 show.

But this isn't just a standard Blade laptop with a new AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU, Razer has designed a whole new class of Blade machine. This is the first 14-inch notebook since Windows 8.1 was introduced, and it is more powerful than anything in its class.

Cutting AMD off into its own little 14-inch niche may have been a good way to keep Intel and Nvidia in the dark about the company's other notebook product lines, but since Razer was lusting after Asus' impressive ROG G14 machine, a 14 inch AMD machine is likely being built now as well.

This laptop served as one of the first new wave flagship Ryzen laptops. In fact, Razer clearly throws shade at Asus in marketing the Blade 14 when talking about competitive materials and choice of the largest GPU.

With "a lot of flexibility" in rival machines and the RTX 3060 as the top GPU, it is clear where Razer sees the advantage. The new Blade 14 uses ultra-thin CN aluminum to stiffen the chassis and offers a SKU with a TGP RTX 3080 up to 100W.

Considering that the Razer Blade 15 Advanced I'm typing here only has a 95W RTX 3080, the impression one gets from such a slender design is quite impressive.

But the chassis and graphics card are the least exciting things to talk about with the Razer Blade 14; the fact that it has AMD's Ryzen 9 5900HX processor at its heart is really the big news. Unfortunately, AMD's naming conventions differ between desktop and mobile, so the Ryzen 9 5900HX has very different specifications than the Ryzen 9 5900X. It is an 8-core, 16-thread chip, which on a desktop would be a 12-core, 24-thread processor.

However, the mobile 5900HX remains a powerful Ryzen with a base clock of 3.3 GHz and a boost clock of 4.6 GHz. This is powerful for a processor in a gaming laptop, especially one that can be slung in a messenger bag.

Razer also talks about up to 12 hours of battery life from this little thing, but if you're packing a 100W RTX 3080 into a 61.6 WHr battery, it's likely much less time than that. Especially if you have a QHD, 1440p, 165Hz panel option like IPS.

There is also an HDMI 2.1 port to output to a 4K monitor or TV at 120Hz. This slim machine actually has a good number of ports, the same as the more robust Blade 15 laptop.

The new Blade 14 is available now and comes in three models, with prices starting at $1799 for the 144Hz 1080p option with RTX 3060. There are also RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 1440p 165Hz screen options for $2,199 and $2,799, respectively. Both have the same Ryzen 9 5900HX chip, 16GB 3,200MHz RAM, and 1TB PCIe SSD, and would make great gaming laptops.
