Cyberpunk 2077" Returns to PlayStation Store Next Week

Released on PC, "Cyberpunk 2077" was rough but not disastrous. On consoles, however, it was a different story, and Metacritic tells the story: the PC version had an overall rating of 86, compared to 57 on PlayStation 4 and 61 on Xbox One. The situation was so bad that Sony actually banned the game from the PlayStation Store a week after launch and offered full refunds to anyone who purchased it there.

Since then, it has become something of a nuisance around CD Projekt's neck. The studio has improved the state of the game with fixes and patches, and in April co-CEO Adam Kicinski promised to make it "something we can be proud of," but there was still no sign that Sony was ready to relent and return "Cyberpunk 2077" to the storefront.

That has now changed. Earlier today, six months after its removal, IGN noticed that Cyberpunk 2077 was once again listed on the PlayStation Store.

"The Management Board of CD Projekt S.A., with registered offices in Warsaw, is pleased to announce that Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to resume selling the digital version of Cyberpunk 2077 on the PlayStation Store from June 21, 2021. We hereby announce this decision," the company said in an official announcement.

A very dry, business-oriented announcement, but a big deal for CD Projekt. In its most recent quarterly report, the company made no bones about the importance of its return to the PlayStation Store, stating that the CD Projekt Red division's performance "depends largely on the sales volume of games set in the Cyberpunk and Witcher universes," and by extension, "Cyberpunk 2077's stated that sales are influenced by two main factors: the continued release of updates and free DLC, and "the return of Cyberpunk 2077 to the PlayStation Store."

At the end of May, Kisinski reiterated his commitment to turn Cyberpunk 2077 around, saying, "We are going to fulfill what we promised." He stated that even six months after the game's release, nearly half of the development team is still working on either the current or next-gen version of the game.

Unfortunately, Cyberpunk 2077's return to the PlayStation Store does not mean that its problems are over, and Sony warned that PS4 users will likely still have issues.

"While CD Projekt Red continues to improve stability across all platforms, the PS4 version will continue to experience performance issues," Sony told IGN. SEE recommends playing this title on PS4 Pro or PS5 for the best possible experience."

CD Projekt declined to comment further.
