The official "Destiny" toaster is real.

The official "Destiny" toaster is real.

In June 2020, Bungie told Destiny 2 players that if they raised at least $777,777.77 (the studio really likes the number 7) during a Gaming Community Expo live stream, they might make Destiny's official toaster ). The community responded by donating more than $800,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during Bungie's block. [Behold the majesty of the Official Destiny Toaster!

This is not really a toaster you can buy, but one that can actually bake tri-corn emblems into bread. It also comes with the sandwich holder shown in the image, and since it is "Destiny 2," you also get a new toast-themed emblem, Burnt Edges.

You may be wondering why players would want Destiny toasters in the first place, but aside from the obvious answer that toast is delicious, it's actually a play on a couple of jokes: one, Destiny players have long been the ones to get the loot drop for the Godroll set of perks has been described as "getting that bread". And two, Destiny 2 features the Jotunn, an ugly, beautiful, exotic fusion rifle that looks a lot like a toaster.

The IRL version of the Destiny 2 toaster is currently available for pre-order at the Bungie Store for $85, not a bad price for a toaster. Of course, I can't say how it compares to the high-end models from Paderno and Lagostina, and it's only a two-slice toaster, but my honest impression is that the price is quite reasonable for a novelty toaster that will likely have limited mass market appeal. (Frankly, the average Wal-Mart shopper probably doesn't want the Destiny logo burning off every time they make a sandwich.)

Another nice plus is that the toaster will continue Bungie's St. Jude support efforts: 10% of the profits from the toaster will be donated to the hospital.

Perhaps not so well known, toasters are surprisingly common in PC gaming; Razer makes its own (which must cost more than $85), and it is at least theoretically possible to play Doom on a toaster. And just last year, Wes got bored and built a 36TB home server about the size of a toaster oven.

Back on topic: the Destiny 2 toaster is currently available for pre-order, but is expected to start shipping in December or even January 2022. Meanwhile, GCX 2021 is now live and will run until June 20 at 1pm PT/4pm ET.
