Video Game Dads Celebrate Father's Day

Father games have been in vogue for a while, so much so that their successors, daughter games, have even appeared: think of "Dishonored 2" or each season of Telltale's "The Walking Dead" since the first. In any case, the "father-son" genre is such that there are numerous games for fathers named after Father's Day:

"The Witcher 3" is truly a father game, and Geralt, despite his prickly exterior, is the driving force behind the entire game: finding and protecting his adopted daughter. CD Projekt has made this day with a tiny video of a hug rather than the traditional father-daughter bond of teaching his adopted daughter swordsmanship, but I think that's acceptable.

Definitely a buyout: "Dishonored the first" is a daddy's game - even if Corvo's being Emily's father was left thick throughout the first film, he has to rescue her in the same way (while she paints adorable and sinister pictures) as his daughter In Dishonored 2, either Corvo or the adult Emily can be the protagonist, and the relationship between the two is clearly drawn. Parkour is a wonderful way to spend Father's Day. Much better than being turned to stone by a witch.

Zagreus' father, Hades, is of course right there, for he interferes with Zagreus' spiritual journey. His journey is also to leave the underworld and find his mother, whom he never had the chance to know. But despite their struggles as a family, the super giants suggest that they can still fish leisurely.

On a point of honor, since "God of War" is not yet available on PC, Kratos, perhaps the most fatherly of father game fathers, has been chosen. With the trend toward fewer and fewer PlayStation exclusives, perhaps more people will get to see this big man gently patting the head of a small child with his large man-sized hands. This, I believe, is the heart of the father game.

We recently wrote about PlayStation exclusive games we'd like to see come to the PC, and there are some well-known dad (and daughter) games featured there.
