Turns out that Tekken x Street Fighter may not be dead after all.

Update: Harada has released a TwitLonger to try to clarify a nuance lost in translation. The English subtitles in Harada's video describe Tekken x Street Fighter as "dead," but according to Harada, this translation should have been more like a "hold" or "pause" on the project.

"You can see," Harada writes, "that the original Japanese subtitles and the English subtitles give a very different impression." So those who can hear Japanese are not particularly interested in this topic."

Tekken x Street Fighter still seems to be in development limbo. At least it is not dead.

Original source: unfortunately, it appears that Tekken x Street Fighter is officially dead in the water, nearly 11 years after it was originally announced. [Tekken creator Katsuhiro Harada and Tekken 7 director Kohei Ikeda broke the news in the latest episode of Harada's Bar, revealing that the project was canceled when Namco Bandai was roughly 30% of the way through development (TheGamer Thank you, thank you). We were working really hard on it," he said. We wish we could have shown you a model or something.

Harada and Ikeda singled out Chun-Li and Dhalsim as characters that looked great in the leap from 2D to 3D, adding that most of the female characters were "really good." Despite the disappointment in the developers' voices, they both reiterated that they would love to showcase their cast in 3D."

"We would love to show you guys eventually, but 'Street Fighter' belongs to Capcom, so we can't do it on our own."

The game has been in limbo for several years, but Harada always insisted it would still be out. He told The Independent in 2012 that development was "not yet 10%, but almost" complete, but announced in 2016 that the game was officially on hold; in 2019, Harada announced that the huge success of Tekken 7 had made justifying "Tekken x Street Fighter" was becoming more difficult, further deepening suspicions (from VGC).

Capcom's contribution to the collaboration, Street Fighter x Tekken, was released in 2012. It threw Tekken's cast into the 2D plane, but poor balance, frequent timeouts, and a gem-assist system that everyone blamed, turned the game into an early grave; a major update in 2013 improved the game significantly, but the damage was already done. Whether this affected the erratic development of Bandai Namco's rival is not known, but it would not be surprising.

"Tekken" x "Street Fighter" was shelved, but its development seems to have had a real impact on "Tekken 7," thanks to "Street Fighter" guest fighter Akuma. Akuma's model is pretty cool," said Harris. There's motion, and you can see it reflected in Akuma."
