Square Enix's tale of a thief who kidnaps a princess and accidentally saves the multiverse comes to the screen: an anime series based on Final Fantasy 9 is being developed by French Cyber Group Studios and Square Enix.

As reported by kidscreen, the deal is done and the project bible is being finished up while Cyber Group Studios pitches the show to broadcasters. Cyber Group's CEO told the magazine that the goal is to start production by the end of 2021 or early 2022; the FF9 cartoon is targeted at 8- to 13-year-olds, so it makes sense that a studio that primarily produces children's programming would take on the project.
