General
AMD chose the worst possible time to discontinue support for older GPUs.

AMD has announced that support for some older cards will be moved to a "legacy support model" with the latest driver update that will begin supporting FidelityFX super resolution and other features. The cards in question are not that old, and include the Radeon R9 Fury and Nano series, 300 series graphics cards (including the Radeon R9 390.)

Legacy support models still get some support, which may not sound so bad on first reading. So basically, these older cards will not get the optimizations they need to run newer games smoothly, and in some cases, not at all, and serious problems will essentially go unaddressed.

I get it, there comes a point where it just doesn't make sense to invest time and resources into cards that fewer and fewer people are using. A line has to be drawn somewhere. However, I don't think the middle of the global silicon shortage is the right time. Especially when we are talking about GPUs, which many of us still use.

A full list of cards that are no longer supported can be found on this page (via SweClockers), but the highlights include:

Desktop graphics cards as well as some APUs and many including the M400 and M300 series mobile products are also no longer supported. [Rest assured that the recently released RX 6000 series is in no way related to the retiring HD 6000 series.

And at the bottom of the document in question is this statement:

"Avid gaming users should consider upgrading to the latest GPUs to benefit from exciting new features, improved performance, lower power consumption, and broad compatibility with the latest PC games. We encourage you to learn more about our current graphics products and where to buy them. For current graphics products and where to buy them, please see: AMD Radeon™ RX Graphics Cards."

To be fair to AMD, this appears to be a standing copy that has been placed at the bottom of this document since 2019, but current hardware conditions could be updated a bit to take into account the current hardware situation.

This is not just AMD, Nvidia has also recently announced that they are doing the same with their Kepler lineup, with the last driver update scheduled for August 31, 2021.
