HP Reverb G2 VR Headset makes for a more attractive purchase with a sale price of $399

If you're not interested in the Oculus Quest 2, another option is HP's Reverb G2. The headset, which normally costs $599, is now available at Walmart for $399, a savings of $200. With the discount, the Reverb G2 suddenly becomes a contender. [It is a 4K headset that offers 2160 x 2160 resolution per eye, enough to counteract the unwanted screen door effect that comes with lower-resolution headsets.

If you have a PC powerful enough to play VR games in 4K, this is great. If not, you can reduce the resolution per eye without much fuss and use a high-end graphics card (remember those?). In that sense, there is an aspect here of preparing for the future whenever possible (of course, nothing really prepares you for the future).

The headset has no base station; in our review of the Reverb G2, we noted that tracking is fickle depending on ambient light. It works well in brightly lit rooms, but can struggle if the lighting is too bright or too dark.

In addition to the high resolution, another advantage to this headset is the ability to fine-tune the interpupillary distance (IPD), or the distance between each lens as it relates to the distance between the eyes. There is a physical slider under the headset that allows for quick and easy adjustment.

Should I choose the Reverb G2 over the Quest 2? For the regular price, we usually recommend the Quest 2 over the Reverb G2. However, the $200 discount could change things. Even with its drawbacks, the Reverb G2 is the best VR headset in the Windows Mixed Reality group. And unlike the Quest 2, there is no need to link it to your Facebook account.
