Xbox wants to take "Killer Instinct" further, but not right now

Phil Spencer said he hopes to bring back "Killer Instinct" on Xbox when the time is right.

Rare's excellent fighting game series was revived in 2013 after being in storage for nearly two decades. The reboot eventually appeared in the Windows Store in 2016 and on Steam in 2017, but has had relatively little support since then. Despite being one of the best fighting games of the past decade, with a tight character roster and rollback netcode, there has been no new content since the third season ended in 2017.

It's hard not to feel like Killer Instinct has been forgotten once again. However, on his latest podcast, "Dropped Frames," Spencer said he hopes to revisit the series when the time is right (thanks, VGC).

"There are a lot of good games in our catalog that we want to revisit," Spencer said.

"When we did KI at the launch of the Xbox One, the response was amazing, and not everyone inside Xbox org saw what that game could be. Matt [Booty] and I have discussed KI and its direction many times.

"It's in our minds that we want to continue to do something with KI. It's about finding the right team and the right opportunity. But the reason we are not doing more KI is not because we are unwilling to do so.

Hopefully we won't have to wait 17 years like we did last time, Killer Instinct is a top-notch fighting game that doesn't carry the same weight as blockbusters like Tekken or Street Fighter, but deserves more love. It's also one of the many games on Game Pass.
