GOG Adds Many Amiga Masterpieces to Begin Retro Summer Sale

As part of its annual summer sale, GOG is going retro and living up to its name: the big news for those who remember the early 90s gaming magazine is the relatively recent reincarnation as "The Bluecoats," "North & South" (20%), and the return of "South: North & South" (50% off). This was a classic strategy title based on the American Civil War, and one of its selling points at the time was that you could play as either side.

There are a number of other titles that evoke a wistful yearning for the good old days; The First Samurai and The Second Samurai are basically "heavily inspired" by games like Shinobi and The Last Ninja. platformers, but among the many examples of such games, these were good ones. Data East's "Wizard Fire" also made an appearance, an arcade game worth a look for "Solstice" fans.

Other titles include the tile puzzler "Breakthru," the caveman platformer sequel "Joe and Mac Returns," and the long-loved and bona fide classic "Saboteur." No, not the underrated 2009 EA game, but the 1985 Spectrum title. I know I shouldn't rush through all of them at once, but at the time it was a genuine masterpiece. The first two and the more recent third are on GOG and are 10% off during the sale.

Confusingly, the discounts end at different times between June 29 and July 4.

Other titles that will be added to GOG in the near future include The Links series (The Challenge of Golf, 386 Pro, and LS: 1998 Edition) and Data East's fighting series, Fighter's History. In addition, retro titles such as Space Empires Complete Pack, Street Racer, and Mashed were also introduced last week.
