Magic Magic: Legends Closes Permanently in October

After a tumultuous and hugely disappointing open beta, the action RPG Magic: Legends will end for good on October 31, 2021. In an announcement posted on the game's official Twitter account, executive producer Steve Ricossa said that Magic: The Gathering RPG was "off the mark" and that the planned Steam and console versions have been canceled. Players who spent money on microtransactions for Magic: The Gathering RPG will receive a full refund for Magic: Legends microtransactions, regardless of whether they paid through the Epic Games Store or Arc launcher.

"Our vision for Magic: Legends was off the mark: Ricossa said, "Our vision for Magic: Legends was off the mark. Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we were able to bring the vast multiverse of Magic: The Gathering to a wider audience and explore new angels within the established genre of ARPGs.

It is always sad to see a live-service game close its curtain for good, but I don't know how many players will be upset (or surprised) by the end of Legends. Right from its launch, Magic: Magic:Legends was criticized for its heavy-handed microtransactions, poor performance, production quality, and design.

" Plott, a heavyweight on the Magic scene, was particularly critical of Magic: Legends' approach to the ARPG genre at the time of its beta release. It's not that the game doesn't have interesting decisions," he said at the time, "it's that it doesn't have decisions. 'You hit a bunch of buttons on cooldown. It doesn't manage mana. In the first three hours, at no point did we manage mana. The current implementation of decks and how they work in combat feels like an anti-system. Rather than creating something new, cool and fun, it feels like a hindrance to gameplay"

Despite several patches and updates, developer Cryptic Studios seems unable to turn things around. Players will be able to continue playing until October 31, 2021, but the cash store will be discontinued immediately, and instead these premium items will be available for purchase with in-game currency.
