Shoot Death in the Hand-Drawn Horror "Kingdom of the Dead"

"Kingdom of the Dead" is an upcoming "old-school FPS" where you are tasked with the mission of killing Death and his army in a black-and-white pen-and-ink representation of 1867 America.

The lore is generously presented on the store page, so that you don't have to worry only about shooting monsters to death in stylish environments. Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, you play as a professor-turned-army general working for a shadow government program dedicated to defeating death and its forces.

While the art style is slightly compromised in the still screenshots, the trailer makes extensive use of dramatic lighting (and lightning) to illuminate the path, dipping in and out of high contrast, and looks incredibly beautiful when in motion.

I can only offer the highest compliment as I watch that shadowy, limbed creature scuttling toward me on a ground constructed of skulls and bones: thank you!

Developer Dirigo Games is as interested in FPS gameplay as it is in horror and style, promising "classic FPS gameplay with different objectives for each difficulty level," eight different weapons, over 22 undead enemies, and an endless gameplay mode with "endless The game promises "a never-ending onslaught" with eight weapons, more than 22 undead enemies, and an endless gameplay mode. [Dirigo Games was previously featured in the third installment of the Dread X Collection, a collection of short indie horror games, which Andy Kelley highlighted as part of the reason why indie games do horror better than anyone else.

"Kingdom of the Dead" is available on Steam and is scheduled for release in early 2022.
