Nvidia has figured out why Doom Eternal crashes annoyingly on some PCs with GeForce hardware and has released a hotfix driver that fixes this problem. They have also removed some other bugs, just in case.

The crashing problem is the biggest of them all. Earlier this week, Nvidia released the usual "Game Ready" GPU driver update (version 471.11 WHQL), adding support for Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology and real-time ray tracing.

"Over 70 RTX games have been released or updated with support for these and other Nvidia technologies, and today Doom Eternal gets its own RTX enhancements," Nvidia said when it dropped the 471.11 driver [471.11] Nvidia stated.

According to Nvidia, turning on DLSS in Doom Eternal can improve performance by up to 60% at 4K and, just as importantly, exceed the 60fps threshold for most supported GPUs. We have not tested this claim, but are generally pleased with DLSS.

However, it is not worth it if the game crashes to the desktop. This is where the 471.22 hotfix driver comes in. It is intended to fix a total of five problems that users may experience even with the latest Game Ready drivers installed. They are:

The 640x480 issue is a particularly frustrating one. We have not encountered it ourselves, but according to a very old support thread, this seems to be a strange bug that appears frequently.

If you have not encountered these particular bugs, there is no need to apply a hotfix. All of these fixes will be incorporated into the next regular driver release.

Hotfixes are not distributed through Nvidia's GeForce Experience utility and will not show up when performing the normal driver search. If needed, visit the 417.22 hotfix page to download and install the update.
